Xakanaxa Camp may be reached by 4x4 vehicle. It is 140km from Maun on sandy roads and the drive takes approximately four hours. The road from Maun to Moremi is tarred for the first 47km up to Shorobe. Then it is graveled for 20km to the Buffalo fence and after that it becomes a “bush” road.
Directions to Xakanaxa Camp:
Travel 32km on sandy roads to South Gate, where you will take the road to “Xakanaxa” (not to Third Bridge). The Department of Wildlife official at South Gate will show you the road to take. Follow this sandy road for another 41km until you pass the Wildlife Department and Xakanaxa Airstrip on your right. Approximately 4km on, at the T-junction, turn right and find the entrance to Xakanaxa Camp on your left.
Road Conditions:
All the roads in Moremi require a four-wheel drive vehicle. During the rainy season the clay soils through the Mopane woodland are difficult to negotiate. The sandy soils are more easy to negotiate during the rainy season because they become compacted. The worst sand in Moremi is in the Third Bridge/Mboma Island area and the worst clays are in the Mopane woodland.
